Near Field Communication (NFC) technology is taking off in the mobile market. Companies such as Samsung, Huawei, are supporting NFC in their mobile products and many more would come up in the near future. NFC can be used for micro-payment, smart poster etc. It can also be used for item level tagging, anti-counterfeiting, post purchase services and personal inventory based on EPC infrastructure. When the EPC code is stored on an NFC tag, the NFC based EPC tag can be integrated in the whole EPC infrastructure in some way. Some company in Japan has already done some initial work and making proposal to NFC forum. It is time to do some work from the GS1 side.

In this project, we would like to look into the main issues and solutions of EPC on NFC, including but not limited to: the memory allocation of EPC memory bank (user bank, EPC bank, TID bank, reserved bank) on NFC tags; definitions and interfaces of EPC on NFC; applications of EPC on NFC.

The objectives of this project are:

1) Evaluate the solutions to store EPC memory bank on NFC tags.

2) Explore the LLRP, EPCIS, and ALE from the NFC point of view and explore how to make the event from the NFC readers recognizable to the EPC infrastructure.

3) Evaluate the solutions to implement EPC infrastructure based on NFC-enabled mobile phones.

4) Implement some demo of EPC-enabled NFC.
